AS A HEAD COACH
FAIR
Receptive to input from assistant coaches. Reasonably delegate responsibility to them and hold them equally accountable. In dealing with the players, the general rule of : Do what you are supposed to do, because that is what you are supposed to do. Allows me to be fair to all members in the program.
SKILLED COMMUNICATOR
I am an effective two-way communicator and I use this skill to get people (students, alumni, community, etc.) involved in, and believing in, the quality of the basketball program and the institution in which we coach and play for
A STUDENT
I pride myself on continuing to study the game and people. I constantly work to be an innovator. I work tirelessly to discover and incorporate newfound information into the existing program and system to help our program continue to improve.
FULLY ACCOUNTABLE
As the head coach I am responsible for all matters within the basketball program including conduct, budgeting, and compliance with institutional, OAC and NCAA Division III rules and policies.
KING OF THE JUNGLE
MENTALITY
Being King of the jungle is about being the best in every aspect of life. The following core values apply to every situation in life, not just basketball: they are basic beliefs that I subscribe to and in turn, will teach my student-athletes. All are necessary and all are achievable. These values will form the foundation of our team.
🏀 INTEGRITY FIRST: Integrity is the key to running a successful organization. My student athletes will know the difference between right and wrong, and will do the right thing even when no one is watching.
🏀 TRUST: It is important to earn student athletes trust, but this will come with the combination of building of a relationship and displaying ‘tough love’, caring about the athlete. They will spend less time questioning whether what I am telling them is actually true, and more time working to execute my direction as their coach.
🏀 EMBRACE THE PROCESS: I believe the people who focus on the daily process and view practice as a requirement for success will outperform those who focus more on results. All of a sudden, practice can become more of an obligation, rather than a must.
🏀 BELIEF: Teammates and coaches must exercise faith. All team members must believe in one another and show this belief by consistent behavior no matter what the circumstances are.
🏀 POISE: I will teach my student athletes how to display confidence under pressure, balance, stability, and composure. This is critical because young men are not accustomed to “stressful” situations. They must learn to focus on performance, not conditions.
When a player graduates with these values, there is no doubt that he will be successful in life. Regardless of his basketball ability, if he has learned organization, accountability, discipline, selflessness and developed his character, then my work with the young man will have been successful.
